Sunderland Yacht Club runs training for the RYA National Powerboat Scheme. This scheme is for those wishing to drive small open powerboats such as Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs), sports boats and small launches. These boats are generally powered by outboard motors, do not have accommodation and therefore would not be used for extended cruises. They may be used for short coastal trips, fishing or for example providing safety cover for other water borne events.
We run Powerboat Level 2 Courses
If you are wishing to take part in these courses we do have a lower age limit of 12.
You don't need a boat; boats and buoyancy aids are provided by the Club for the course.
Before you can join our training/coaching courses you will need to become a member of the Club. For adults we have an Introductory Crew membership for the first year. Junior and Student membership is available for people under 18 and 25 respectively. See the SYC Fees and Charges for these fees
Courses are carried out, usually over a weekend, and these are charged at £120.00
Powerboat Level 2
This course runs for two days and provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) for boats up to 10m in length.
It includes close quarters handling, high speed manoeuvers, man overboard recovery and collision regulations. The course we run will get the coastal endorsement and if you require you can extend the course to get the displacement endorsement.
This course has a minimum age of 12. Candidates under the age of 16 will not be issued with a full certificate but would get an endorsement.
After the course candidates will be self-sufficient powerboaters in the right conditions and aware of their own limitations and those of the craft.
