SRC VHF Radio Course
We run courses for Club Members who wish to obtain a licence for a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio. A VHF radio is an important piece of safety equipment on a boat and it is vital that operators understand how to operate the equipment and the correct user procedures.
Cost of the course: SRC VHF Course (2 days) - £72 inc VAT. course cost + £60 exam fees and licence issue fee payable to the RYA If you are not a club member there will be an additional charge of £40.
The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on British flagged craft.
Course topics include:
- The basic radio operation
- The correct frequencies (channels) to be used
- Distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures
- Making ship to shore telephone calls
- Digital Selective Calling (DSC) using simulators
- Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
- Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (GMDSS)
- Search and Rescue (SART)
The course will be taught and examined using radio simulators. The exam will also include a short written test.
Once the course has been successfully completed your license will be issued by the RYA

Sunderland Yacht Club is an RYA training establishment and provides training in the following:
- Dinghy Sailing Levels 1 & 2
- Power Boat Levels 1 & 2 (including International Certificate of Competence)
- SRC VHF Radio Course
- RYA First Aid (one day)
In addition to the formal Dinghy Sailing courses the Club also provides regular coaching activities where Club members can take part in a controlled environment during the summer months. It is structured to encourage junior members onto the water in sailing dinghies, but is also open to adults who wish to learn. Since attaining RYA Volvo Championship Club status, SYC has access to RYA coaching resources proving a great benefit to those taking part.
Through continued investment the club also owns the necessary equipment required to successfully organise and run Training and Coaching events. You don't even need to own your own boat to participate, but there are a limited number of club boats, and the allocation of trainees to boats will be made based on the amount of time a particular participant has spent in a boat. Priority been given to those with the least experience. Participants in the training scheme are encouraged to progress towards boat ownership.
For further information contact our Training Manager or drop into any of our coaching sessions.
Sunderland Yacht Club runs training for the RYA National Powerboat Scheme. This scheme is for those wishing to drive small open powerboats such as Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs), sports boats and small launches. These boats are generally powered by outboard motors, do not have accommodation and therefore would not be used for extended cruises. They may be used for short coastal trips, fishing or for example providing safety cover for other water borne events.
We run Powerboat Level 2 Courses
If you are wishing to take part in these courses we do have a lower age limit of 12.
You don't need a boat; boats and buoyancy aids are provided by the Club for the course.
Before you can join our training/coaching courses you will need to become a member of the Club. For adults we have an Introductory Crew membership for the first year. Junior and Student membership is available for people under 18 and 25 respectively. See the SYC Fees and Charges for these fees
Courses are carried out, usually over a weekend, and these are charged at £120.00
Powerboat Level 2
This course runs for two days and provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat and is the basis for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) for boats up to 10m in length.
It includes close quarters handling, high speed manoeuvers, man overboard recovery and collision regulations. The course we run will get the coastal endorsement and if you require you can extend the course to get the displacement endorsement.
This course has a minimum age of 12. Candidates under the age of 16 will not be issued with a full certificate but would get an endorsement.
After the course candidates will be self-sufficient powerboaters in the right conditions and aware of their own limitations and those of the craft.
